The underlying philosophy of SeaAid is that collectively small deeds can make a big difference in people's lives. Imagine if everyone attending a college sporting event brought just one can of food with them to donate. Combined, their generosity would feed a LOT of people!
To many small communities, a box of medical supplies, clothing, fishing gear, etc., can really help them through a tough time. SeaAid seeks to harness the adventurous and compassionate spirit of the yachting community in an effort to give something back to the small coastal communities that enrich our boating experiences.
At any given time, there are literally thousands of corporate and private yachts sailing the world's oceans. In many cases, these yachts sail in very close proximity to small coastal communities. SeaAid has developed a web-based network for "Samaritan Sailors" that would be willing to use their yachts to deliver medical and other needed supplies directly to coastal communities in need.
A few weeks prior to their departure from port, participating yacht owners can provide SeaAid with a copy of their proposed sailplan. SeaAid will check our exclusive database of anthropologists, ecologists, and other professionals who work directly with small coastal communities. We will then compile a list of SeaAid partner communities located along the intended cruising route who have requested supplies through our network. SeaAid will provide the yacht owner with a list of requested supplies, the name and contact information for a designated village representative, and a set of waypoints to a safe anchorage at or near the partner community.
Yacht owners can purchase the supplies in their country of origin, or they can procure them while in route to the partner community. In most cases, the requested supplies would not take up any more space than a large suitcase, and would not cost more than $500.
If you would like to participate in the Samaritan Sailor Network, please call our offices or send an email to samaritansailor@SeaAid.org.
